100% ownership, fast incorporation
Free Zone Company Setup in the UAE
The UAE has more than 40 free zones, each with its own activities, packages and rules. DocTrust compares them side by side and sets up your company in the one that fits your business and budget.
Quick answer
A UAE free zone company is licensed by a free zone authority rather than an emirate economic department. It offers 100% foreign ownership, full profit repatriation, simple incorporation (often in under a week) and visa packages linked to office type. Free zone companies mainly trade within their zone and internationally. Selling directly to the UAE mainland usually needs a distributor or extra permit.
How a free zone company works
Each free zone is a designated economic area with its own authority, regulations and licensing. Companies are usually set up as a Free Zone Establishment (FZE/FZ-LLC) with one shareholder or a Free Zone Company (FZCO/FZ-LLC) with several, or as a branch of an existing company.
Free zone companies can qualify for a 0% corporate tax rate on qualifying income as a Qualifying Free Zone Person, if they meet substance and other conditions. Income from mainland transactions is generally taxed at the standard 9%.
How to pick the right free zone
- Activity fit: some zones specialise (media, commodities, finance, industry)
- Visa needs: packages range from 0 to 6+ visas, and more need larger offices
- Location: Dubai addresses carry prestige, while northern emirates cost less
- Total cost of ownership: compare renewal fees, not just year one
- Banking: some banks are more comfortable with certain zones
- Mainland access: check dual-licence or mainland permit options

Free Zone Company Setup: common questions
Can a free zone company do business in the mainland?
Free zone companies can sell to mainland customers through a mainland distributor or agent, or by getting a mainland branch licence or permit where available. Some free zones and emirates offer dual-licence arrangements.
What is the cheapest free zone in the UAE?
Zones in Sharjah, Ajman, RAK and UAQ often have the lowest starting packages. The right choice depends on activities, visas and renewal costs, not just the headline price.
How many visas can I get with a free zone licence?
It depends on the package and office type. Flexi-desk packages often include 1–3 visas, while serviced offices and warehouses allow more.
Do free zone companies pay corporate tax?
Free zone companies are within the UAE corporate tax system. If they meet the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions, qualifying income can be taxed at 0%. Other income is taxed at 9% above the threshold. Registration with the FTA is required either way.
